I am a 20-something nail artist, blogger and dog-mom living in Northeast Ohio. Five years ago, I never would have guessed that basically all facets of my life would involve nail polish. I earned my BS in Biology with a minor in geology and environmental science from The University of Akron in 2010 and immediately entered into graduate school to pursue a MS in biology. In 2011, it became evident to me that this was not my path. While biology was my academic passion and school had always been my strong suit, I realized that this was NOT the lifestyle I wanted. I spiraled into the darkest depression episode I had ever experienced, and desperately searched for hobbies and potential career paths that could pull me out. I needed to find something that made me tick and lit my fire, without creating so much anxiety in my soul. I started painting my nails more often, and really enjoyed learning more about nail polish and nail art from a few of the blogs I started reading. It was creative. It was fun. It was feminine. It was something I could share with people. And I LOVED it.
At the urging of a high school acquaintance (you can follow her blog HERE), I decided to start The Lacquerologist in January 2012. Looking back at my earliest posts, it’s crazy to see how far my nail art game has come! It only took a few months to realize that this was what I wanted to do. I wanted to share the happiness that nails had brought me with others. Blogging served as an escape for me from my day job as a graduate student, but why should I have to escape from my day job at all? I have always been a passion-driven person, so in the spring of 2012, I decided to leave graduate school and start a career in the beauty industry.
In the summer of 2012, I attended Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture, Inc in Alliance, OH and earned my Managing Manicurist license. I had a great experience at Raphael’s, studying under a fabulous manager and along side inspiring classmates. I started to feel like myself again! I graduated in July and took my State Board exam that fall. My professional career began at a small day spa in Canton, OH where I worked with a great team of massage therapists and estheticians.
In early 2013, one of the massage therapists who I had been working with asked me to coffee. We sat down and she presented me with a business plan for a small holistic spa in Canton, OH that would really showcase the services and lifestyle we both encouraged. After a quick discussion with my husband, I signed on with Stephanie and Body•Spa•Banquet was born! Stephanie is a licensed massage therapist, holistic health coach and Reiki master (you can read her blog HERE), so her service menu combined easily with the eco-friendly, natural nail services I wanted to offer. Our goal is to make women feel fabulous inside and out! We opened in May 2013, and as our clientele continues to grow, we have created a space that is really special to us and our clients. If you are interested in a manicure, pedicure, or OPI GelColor manicure and will be in Canton, OH, click HERE to schedule!
In 2014, I created my first book with the fabulous people at Alpha Books. They approached me about authoring an Idiot’s Guides book all about nail art, and I couldn’t have been more excited! I worked with a local photographer (and awesome friend), Debbie York of Beauty Tree Photography to create step-by-step, full-color tutorials of some of my favorite nail art designs. Idiot’s Guides: Nail Art released in early 2015 and is available on Amazon.com and at Barnes & Noble. So far the feedback has been great. I get tagged in social media posts daily featuring recreations of the designs in the book, and it makes my heart sing. Nail art is all about sharing between women, and through Idiot’s Guides: Nail Art, I get to share with even more people around the world!
So what’s to come for The Lacquerologist in 2015?! More nail polish, of course! As I continue to build a clientele at Body•Spa•Banquet and build relationships with brands through The Lacquerologist, I will be bringing you more and more reviews and nail art. I also hope to branch out into more lifestyle posts on the blog that I hope you’ll find interesting. In 2015, I will (finally) launch my YouTube channel and continue to grow on social media (click the social media icons in the upper right-hand corner of the blog to follow along).
In my free time, I hang out with my husband of nearly four years, Benn, who is a professional videographer. We have a spirited rescue pup named Bob who you can see on Instagram under the tag #bobdraher. He’s a lab mix and just so full of love and energy. He keeps me busy! I’m a Parks and Rec addict, Netflix binge-watcher, Steelers fan, bubble bath lover, and coffee drinker. For a glimpse into my personal life, be sure to follow me on Instagram.
